Personal genetics company 23andMe wants to give African-Americans a detailed glimpse into the past. Starting today, the company is offering free genetic testing kits to 10,000 African-Americans in hopes to bolster  African-American medical research while allow Black Americans to explore their global origins.

Eligible participants must be  of African descent, at least 18 years of age, and have access to a computer and the Internet and be willing to complete an online survey about their health.

“This research initiative presents a tremendous opportunity for African-Americans to learn essential information about themselves, their families, and their ancestry,” Harvard professor Henry Louis gates Jr. says on the 23andMe website.
