The family of a man who died after being tased by police while he was a patient at University Hospital has filed a lawsuit. Find out details on the claims and what the staff has to say inside now.

Details of a recent lawsuit filed by the family of a man who died after being tased by local police are unfolding in this morning’s headlines.

Kelly Brinson, Sr.’s family members have filed a lawsuit against University Hospital claiming Brinson was handcuffed and tased multiple times while University of Cincinnati police officers attempted to restrain him. Brinson, who originally admitted himself to the hospital after suffering from a reported psychotic episode, died several days after the incident.

Excessive force used against Brinson violates his constitutional rights according to the additional claims made by his family. The University and hospital staff both claim Brinson’s reactions were indeed violent which caused them to try to restrain him with or without handcuffs and multiple tasings. As interesting as the story reads, there’s so much more happening that we must take a look at here. What do you think is really going on with this story? Does it seem odd that Brinson’s apparent condition wasn’t addressed properly? Do you think the University of Cincinnati police officers were out of line? What does this say about the medical procedures provided by the University Hospital in situations like this? Visit WCPO.com today to read more on the lawsuit and the responses from both the University Hospital staff members and the police.

The University of Cincinnati faces another round of layoffs this summer. Check out how many employees may not have a job in a few weeks.

Interesting reports this week come from the University of Cincinnati where up to two dozen employees are on the chopping block and might lost their jobs at the beginning of next month.

The layoffs would come shortly after news of the efforts to balance the budget for the next year. Already 120 people were laid off last year and the university hopes to actually avoid the 24 layoffs if possible.

It doesn’t look like that will happen as the new fiscal year begins July 1st. Millions of dollars have been set aside to fill in the gaps left over from the $28 million federal stimulus gift, a set of funds that will disappear at the end of this year. So layoffs seem like they’re pretty much guaranteed at this point.

Cincinnati, how do you feel about the reports of more layoffs at UC? Do you know anyone currently working there or do you work there yourself? Let us know how the economy impacts spending when it comes to educational institutions like UC in your own words.

Do we really have time to gripe about Kelly's departure, when us UC fans need to be more optimistic than ever for our football team that's playing in the Sugar Bowl?

This one’s for all my UC Football Fans out there, who are very shocked, dissappointed, and upset about Brian Kelly taking the coaching position at Notre Dame. We’re all thinking : “How could he go against his word? He said he loved Cincinnati, and he wasn’t going anywhere.” Well it turned out, from yesterday, we were all wrong. So what do we do now? Do we doom and gloom, do we put away our UC Football jersey, do we watch something else on New Years Day instead of the Sugar Bowl? I mean, come on, what’s the point of rooting for our team now that the college football coach of the year has left us?

This situation sounds familiar. Doesn’t it remind you of the time when you broke up with your first love? You spend weeks beating yourself up, thinking “Why did he/she leave? I thought we were gonna be together forever.” What about the time when you worked so hard at your job, and when you least expect it, you later find out you’re laid off by your boss? Or how about the time you wished the gossip queen, in your church, would just stop spreading rumors about other people. These are all situations, where we feel helpless and powerless over a situation that we want to control.

I had an inspiring moment yesterday when i logged onto my facebook account. Just a few minutes when they made the announcement of Brian Kelly leaving, i saw this facebook group called, “Time to support OUR team”. In the description area, it read :

What we need to do now is SUPPORT OUR TEAM!!!!

These young men have not made a single penny, they play hard because they love football, the same as you and I. The worse that we could do as fans is to abandon them, just like BK. We need to show our support now more than ever, go to the bowl if you can afford to, cheer loud, wear your red and black proud. And lets continue to do so for many years to come. Let’s show Brian Kelly that we don’t need him to be a successful program.

Thanks for the kick start Kelly, we’ll take it from here.

Wow, talk about optimism right there!! When i looked at the number of members in the group, there were 1,008 members!! 1,008 MEMBERS!! It blows my mind that just minutes after the dreadful annoucement came up, a core group as large as 1,000 people were so optimistic. Imagine the things one can do if they were surrounded by these 1,000 optimistics.

There are two lessons we can learn from this. The first one is we can cannot control everything and everyone in our life. We are not in control of Brian Kelly’s decisions, Brian Kelly is. We may be able to influence his decision, but in the end Brian Kelly decides for Brian Kelly. Let him go! What’s more important is that we join those 1,000 optimistic UC fans, and turn it into 100,000 or even 1,000,000 optimistic UC fans. Bottom line is that when your surrounded by positive people, you do positive things. Keep your head up!!!

GO BEARCATS, lets have less of this:

And more of this:

The road to greatness for UC wide receiver Mardy Gilyard has not been an easy one.

VIA: Paul Daugherty, SI.com

The young man living in his car is passing out free sack lunches in the park downtown. He’s fresh from his construction job, so he looks a lot like the people he’s feeding: dirty blue jeans; hooded sweatshirt; size-12, steel-toed Red Wing boots. A homeless man, feeding homeless men. Charity squared.

In two years, he would be breaking pass receiving records on an undefeated team and playing in a game for a conference championship. NFL scouts would assess his worthiness as a No. 1 draft pick. The red carpet would roll right out there. It would be clean and waiting.

But he wasn’t thinking about that now. Couldn’t even imagine it. Now, he was wondering where he would sleep that night and how cold it would be.

Mardy Gilyard did not spend every night for six months folded up in the driver’s seat of the green 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, lent to him by the brother of his then-fiancée. That’s urban legend in Cincinnati, and it is mythic. Fact is, Gilyard did lots of time, in the fall and winter of 2006 and 2007, on living room couches and dorm-room floors.

But not this night. This night, he’d spend shivering in the car. After he worked construction, sold cutlery door to door, delivered some pizzas and fed the homeless in Washington Park.

In the fall of 2006, former University of Cincinnati coach Mark Dantonio revoked Gilyard’s scholarship. He’d come to school, but not gone to school. His grades lacked. That was a problem. Here was a bigger one: Gilyard already had registered for classes. He owed the school almost $10,000. He didn’t have a dime.

That’d be the end for most kids, especially kids from a place like Bunnell, Fla., a proud, but poor town between Jacksonville and Daytona Beach. Bunnell owns all the standard urban calamity — drugs, shootings, domestic violence — but also a lot of the virtues families need to survive. Mardy was loved and cared for. But nobody had a spare 10 grand to offer him.

The ledge awaited, and it was narrow. Gilyard wanted to jump off and go home. At home, nobody would let him. He called his mother.

“Mama, I’m coming ho –.” He didn’t get to finish the sentence.

“No, you’re not,” said Ms. Viola Gilyard Crudup, a formidable woman. “And if we see you here, we will ship you back.”

Mardy took another shot, this time with Otis, his older brother by nine years. In Viola’s single-working-parent household, Otis was brother, babysitter, man of the house to Mardy. He’d advised his kid brother to attend college closer to home. Stay in Florida, he’d suggested, where people know you and will look out for you, where your fame is recognized.

Mardy chose Cincinnati. Now, he wished he hadn’t.

“Tell mama to let me come home,” Mardy asked Otis. “Let her know I made a mistake. I need to come home and regroup”

Otis: “No.”

Mardy: “OK, bro’. But I don’t have a scholarship. If I stay, how am I gonna pay?”

“You got into the mess,” Otis offered. “Figure a way out of it.”

Mardy Gilyard has caught 75 passes this year for 1,052 yards. He has 21 receiving touchdowns the last two seasons. He has scored four more times returning kicks. He is the metaphor for how fifth-ranked Cincinnati plays the game. The Bearcats’ offense is a 33-rpm record, playing at 78-rpms. Nobody is spinning faster than their senior wide receiver.

Next spring, he’ll likely be a late first-round or early second-round draft pick, a 6-foot-1 burner with very good hands and unchallenged toughness. A slot receiver and return man, in the mold of Wes Welker and T.J. Houshmandzadeh. If the fairy tale ending plays out, he’ll sleep in a car again. But only if he wants to.

How did this happen? How did the redemption song of the college season find its way into the iPod rotation? What sort of person is homeless, yet spends his limited free time feeding other homeless? Talk about irony. Who is this guy?

“Blessed,” is all he says. Actually, Gilyard says a lot more. He talks as fast as he plays. But the conversations always ends with that. Blessed.

Have the Bengals and the Bearcats winning seasons boost your morale? Has it given you a sense of encouragement?

Good morning Cincinnati! How about those Bengals and Bearcats? The Bearcats are 10-0 and the Bengals are 7-2, after beating the Steelers yesterday. It’s a great way to start off the week, but it makes me wonder : do you get a sense of encouragement when your favorite sports team wins?

James Johnson of Helium.com thinks a winning sports team can distract you from other problems such as a downtrodden economy.

The team can tie into all aspects of the community. High society and low, both can point to the team and say, we are a part of it. Poor can’t build fancy parks or massive skyscrapers, but they can help build a winning team of athletes. Creating a sense of pride in a downtrodden city can turn attitudes, crime and even the economy or the city around. This is because morale is one of the most important things in any community, and few things boost morale like supporting a winner.

The sports team can also give a visible, central focal point on which the downtrodden city can concentrate. This serves as a distraction from the less successful things that may be happening. “Crime may be rising, but what about our team!” may sound petty, but it will boost the morale of a lot of people. When morale boosts high enough, crime goes down as people stop fighting, the police can concentrate on real crime instead of “domestic disputes” and morale rises even higher.

That is how winning sports teams act as morale boosters in downtrodden cities, by showing that everything isn’t rotten and positive things can still happen. They bring all aspects and communities in the city together A winning sports team gives it some heroes and the young some one to emulate. If the people feel successful they start to feel better and act better, and that boosts everybody’s morale. Of course after a winning season it may no longer be a downtrodden city, it has been uplifted by that boost!

There are some health experts that believe that a winning team can have a positive emotional affect on your health. Amy Dickson, a clinical psychologist, believes so :

I think you can sense the upbeat nature in the city. A winning team can equal a winning mentality for fans in other aspects of their lives. It’s a real boost for people’s functioning in the city. (via: wwltv.com)
