Hardly a week goes by without a story of students either having sex in a classroom or being duct-taped by a teacher. Whatever happened to the good old days when you spoke out in class and received detention or you didn’t do your homework and you received detention or you were late for class and you received detention?

Those days have been replaced by shots fired, sex in the classroom or duct-taping. Are teachers so over-worked that they fail to notice students having sex under the desk? Or are they so stressed out their response to an unruly student is duct-taping 101?

So in the case of Irel Cuffie, the teacher told him to sit down after he moved his seat during a test, he was duct-taped to his chair so that he wouldn’t move again.

Slavery In School Math Worksheet Upset Norcross Parents

Controversy has taken hold of an Atlanta elementary school when students received a math worksheet that had examples of slavery in the word problems.

Gwinnett County parents and activists have already begun voicing their disbelief, and are unwillingness to allow such learning practices to go unaddressed. The worksheets included problems such as: “Each tree had 56 oranges. If 8 slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?” and “If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in 1 week?” School district officials said the principal at Beaver Ridge Elementary School will work closely with the teachers to create appropriate lessons, as well as offer more opportunity for staff development.

Ex-Porn Star Reading To LA Students Causes Stir

COMPTON, Calif. (AP) — Some parents have filed complaints with the Parent-Teacher Association after a former adult film star said she read to children in a classroom at a Los Angeles County elementary school.

Sasha Grey, a 23-year-old ex-porn actress who has appeared in mainstream shows like HBO’s “Entourage,” was a guest earlier this month at Compton’s Emerson Elementary School for Read Across America Day.

Grey tweeted Nov. 2 that she spent the day reading to students in the first and third grades.

KTLA-TV quoted parents questioning whether it was appropriate to have Grey at the school. Parent Dudley Wheaton wondered why the school couldn’t find a fireman or a police officer to read to students.

Grey has not appeared in porn films in over two years. She has been a regular on “Entourage” and appeared in the 2009 film “The Girlfriend Experience.”

High School Cheerleaders Cut For Being Black?

PARK VISTA, FL — Eight Black Florida teenagers are rallying against what they claim to be racial discrimination after not one of them made their high school cheerleading team.

Known locally as the “Park Vista 8,” the girls are alleging that they are being racially harassed by their peers.

When Park Vista High School sophomore Maya Jean-Charles didn’t make the cheerleading squad she wasn’t just disappointed, she was offended. As one of eight African-American girls who also didn’t make the team, she felt that the decision may have been racially motivated.

Child Humiliated By Mock Slave Auction At Elementary School

GAHANNA, Ohio — An African-American mother and son were astonished after a History teacher at Chapelfield Elementary School held a mock slave auction, dividing the class into “Slaves” and “Masters”. The class only had two black students in the class; one was assigned “Master”, and the other, Nikko Burton, was assigned “Slave”.

Burton, 10, was sent to his seat after he refused to be poked, prodded, and be humiliated during the reenactment. A spokeswomen for the school maintains that the lesson is part of a “state required” curriculum.

While a representative for the school has apologized to the family over the phone, 10 year old Burton wishes that the teacher would have apologized to him personally.

“He felt degraded, he was hurt and the kids picked on him later,” Aneka Burton [Nikko's mother] said. “I feel like that was totally inappropriate; it was racist and it was degrading.”

Message To Adults: It Is Your Job To Prevent Bullying

This is a plea to parents, teachers and any other adult who plays a role in a child’s life. In the past several weeks, there have various cases of young kids and teens committing suicide due to the constant bullying that they are experiencing at school. Thus far the reactions over their deaths have been mixed. What I have noticed from the commentary regarding their deaths is that there are adults who feel as though these kids should have gotten over being bullied, and should not have been so sensitive.

Granted I do think that the kids of this generation may be prone to be more sensitive and that may be a part of the overall reason why the bullying is overwhelming to them. However, by no means do I think that the act of bullying is justifiable and something that kids should just “get over”. For starters, it is not the child’s job alone to protect themselves. It is the parents as well. In fact it is more so the adults in that child’s life role.

Parents Whose Children Bully Other Students Should Face Fines!

I also think that it is deeper than the kids merely being overly sensitive. It is obvious that these kids are in a constant state of frightened self reliance and feel as though there is no one there to save them. For that reason I feel that more parents should become involved in their children’s lives. If you have a child who has informed you that they are being tormented at school by another student then it is your job to follow through and speak to someone at the school. It is your job to at least make the effort to find a way to put a stop to the bullying. It is your job to at least try, even if you don’t necessarily have the time or think that the situation is that dire. It is your job to express interest in your child’s happiness and peace of mind. It is also your job to make your children aware that they are not alone and that there are people who are willing to listen.

I have issues with the teachers and other authority figures at school as well. Obviously there is a disconnect between them and the students. Somewhere along the line, the students stopped feeling as though they could confide in teachers when they were being harassed. Somehow they now feel that telling will do them no justice. These kids are under the impression that there is no one who can protect or help them and the only way out of their personal hell is by killing themselves. That is a warped state of mind. How did we allow our children to get there? What are we as adults’ not doing that is making them believe that they are so alone?

It is also the job of the parents whose kids are doing the bullying to put an end to it once they discover it is happening. They are as much to blame for their child’s behavior as the child is. How To Keep School Day Mornings Calm

We can’t believe it… school is starting up again. And that means that the early-morning scramble is about to start.

Here are some tips for keeping the mornings calm from shine.com:

1. Get enough sleep yourself. I’m good at putting my kids to sleep at a decent hour, but not so good about doing it myself. It’s tempting to stay up late, to enjoy the peace and quiet, but 6:30 a.m. comes fast, and being overtired makes the morning much tougher.

2. Sing. As goofy as it sounds, I try to sing in the morning. It’s hard both to sing and to maintain a grouchy mood, and it sets a happy tone for everyone—particularly in my case, because I’m tone deaf, and my audience finds my singing a source of great hilarity.

3. Say “no” only when it really matters. Wear a bright red shirt with bright orange pants and bright green shoes? Sure. As Samuel Johnson said, “All severity that does not tend to increase good, or prevent evil, is idle.”

Local Kids Used Summer to Prepare for Fall

What happens when you cut summer break short for local students of Cincinnati Public Schools? Hope – something educators across the city believe will bring about a change concerning our students’ academic achievement.

Cincinnati Public School system's Fifth Quarter program proves to be a success in preparation for fall academics.

A Fifth Quarter was added to the lineup of regularly scheduled classes back in June to allow elementary students an opportunity to participate in the program. The students ended up spending several weeks with their teacher for the upcoming school year and getting a jump start on new material. Some local schools witnessed enrollment and participation rates as high as 75 percent, according to a statement from Lauren Mitchell, deputy superintendent for Cincinnati Public Schools. The extended summer educational enrichment courses “focused on acceleration for next year, working toward state standards in core areas,” says Mitchell.

Even in the triumphant launch of the Fifth Quarter program, there’s still some room for even greater change. To date, the Cincinnati Public School system serves more than 33,000 students in 58 schools. About 70 percent of the students are black, and 27 percent are white, but like a variety of urban systems across the country, CPS faces stiff challenges.

On Monday, the school board is expected to vote on its budget that could include more than $20 million in cuts for items such as supplements for coaches, school crossing guards and reductions in transportation services. Four Charged in Videotaped School Beating

Remember this one? 40-year-old Houston charter school teacher Sheri Lynn Davis makes headlines again this month with new details of the case that’s had families up in arms since the spring quarter of the school year concluded recently.

40-year-old teacher Sheri Lynn Davis of Houston, TX was caught on video beating a student.

If you recall, this same teacher was caught on a cell phone video camera beating, slapping and kicking a 13-year-old boy in class on April 29th. She was fired the following week from Jamie’s House Charter School in northwest division of Houston, TX.

Davis has officially been charged with injury to a child, a third-degree felony and could face up to 10 years in prison. She also faces up to a $10,000 fine if convicted, according to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. Facing charges alongside Davis are three additional employees including the school’s superintendent and founder Ollie Hilliard, the principal David Jones and a teacher who in fact actually witnessed the attack, Gabriel Moseley.

Each are being charged with misdemeanor counts including failure to report child abuse, but each could also face up to one year in Harris County jail and be forced to pay fines of $4,000 individually if convicted.
