Mary Mary Uplifts Disaster Surviors With New Single

Grammy-winning Gospel duo Mary Mary’s new single “Survive,” ofF their latest release is a testament to the sisters message and a symbol of the good they promote.

This week, the group announced a partnership with the American Red Cross to raise awareness for disaster victims, an effort inspired by their experience performing in devastated, earthquake stricken communities in Alabama.

“We were able to see the devastation but also see the hope,” Tina Campbell said. “We decided to [partner] with Red Cross and show some of the efforts where people are pulling things back together and helping those who are in worst scenarios.”

Mary Mary stopped into the Radio Room at the 2011 BET Awards the day before the LIVE show and talked to Baltimore’s Konan about their upcoming projects and more. Now if you know Konan like I know Konan, you know that once the cameras roll, expect the unexpected! The interview was going as normal as it could go when all of a sudden Konan asked “when did you have your last argument/fight?” Watch what happened next. You can’t help but to love and admire their sheer honesty. That’s why I love Mary Mary!

Last night the 42nd Annual GMA Dove Awards was aired. It definitely made for great family viewing on Easter night. This year’s awards show was a much more solid mix of urban and pop. In year’s past the awards show focused more on the Pop Rock side of Contemporary Christian.

Last night’s show was a perfect example of “East Meeting West” if ever there was. Grammy-Award-winners Mary Mary opened the show with a Rhythm Nation-esque performance of their new single “Never Wave My Flag,” which garnered a standing ovation from the crowd. A never-seen-before performance titled “The Singing Pastors” was a memorable highlight. In an unforgettable move, Bishop Paul S. Morton and pastors Marvin Sapp, Smokie Norful, Dietrick Haddon and Donald Lawrence took over the stage together.

he night was full of special collaborations. Chris Tomlin and the Passion Artists ignited the evening with a Praise and Worship sing-a-long of “Our God”, Third Day’s single “Children of God,” represented hope as Third Day was joined by Mark Hall of Casting Crowns and Steven Curtis Chapman to honor Chapman and his wife Mary Beth’s ministry, SHOW HOPE with the GMC UPLIFT SOMEONE award. Kenny Rogers and Point of Grace finished with a standing ovation. Other show highlights included all of the Female Vocalist of the Year nominees performing a tribute to the legendary Sandi Patty, the Dove Award’s most honored female singer to date.

Kirk Franklin raised the roof in his inimitable way his high energy closing that rounded out an evening of performances that ranged from country to hip-hop to contemporary gospel, rock and pop all representing the uplifting message of Gospel and Christian music. All-in-all, the evening played host to many outstanding performances by Jason Crabb and MIKESCHAIR, Natalie Grant and LeCrae, Committed and Ernie Haase & Signature Sound, Mary Mary, Kenny Rogers with Point of Grace and many more. The Dove Awards represent a wide-array of musical styles ranging from Adult Contemporary, Bluegrass, Country, Gospel, Inspirational, Pop, Rap/Hip-Hop, Rock, Spanish Language, Urban and Worship categories. The most moving moment of the evening was Marvin Sapp dedicating his award to the memory of his wife. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. First time host Sherri Shepherd was a standout having the audience in the palm of her hand and clearly enjoyed the musical performances. This is the first time a non-musical act has hosted the awards show.

Mary Mary Answers Fans About Cancellation of BET Sunday Best

The girls are back on the Internet! Sisters Erica & Tina Campbell (of Mary Mary) took part in an exclusive fan chat yesterday evening live from the recording studio and of course they brought the love, the laughs and so much more for the dedicated fans and the newcomers anticipating the release of their new album Something Big coming early 2011.

The fans had alot to ask and the Marys had even more to say. We had a great time in chat with Mary Mary and their fans from all over the world. Filled with comments and questions (that were coming in at a super fast pace) about everything from their hairstyles, to their new music, to their writing process and everything in between. Trust us when we say, it’s absolutely hilarious and refreshing to see two of gospel’s most beloved vocalists literally let their hair down and let it all hang out while having fun making great music.

One of the fans asked a question of the girls to find out if they were going to be doing Sunday Best again this year. We expected to hear details of the new season of the hit BET singing competition which has launched the careers of gospel superstars such as Crystal Aikin, Shari Addison, Y’Anna Crawley, Jessica Reedy and quite a few others.

Instead, Mary Mary said that BET would not be bringing Sunday Best back. (Cue collective gasp.)

2010 Gospel Grammys Bring Triumphs And Upsets

This year’s ceremony for the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards was touted as the most exciting ceremony in years, drawing in more than 25 millions viewers. However, unless those viewers visited Grammy.com, they probably didn’t find out about the latest pack of winners in the Gospel music field (most awards are presented in an earlier ceremony that isn’t televised). However, the honor is no less prestigious and we celebrate with these artists who are being recognized worldwide. Check out some of the highlights from this winners in this field:

Best Gospel Performance:
“Wait On The Lord” – Donnie McClurkin featuring Karen Clark Sheard

Donnie McClurkin previously won three Grammy awards. After much too long a delay, Karen Clark Sheard finally won two Grammy awards with her sisters Jacky, Dorinda, and Twinkie, plus an additional Grammy for being the writer of their song “Blessed and Highly Favored.” This should provide a nice momentum for Karen as her new album All In One is slated to be released on April 6, 2010.

Best Gospel Song:
“God In Me” – Mary Mary featuring Kierra “Kiki” Sheard

No one is surprised by the latest award netted by the ladies of Mary Mary. The Campbell sisters have a knack for penning melodies that are as loved in church as they are outside of it. This time, they struck gold with their swag-accessible anthem of praise “God In Me.” Although Clark heiress Kierra Sheard is a featured artist on the song, the Grammy award only goes to its songwriters Erica, Tina, and Warryn Campbell. Their The Sound album has already won them one Grammy for Best Gospel Performance with the lead single “Get Up.” Also, their debut album Thankful won them the Grammy for Best Contemporary Gospel Album the same year it was released.

Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album:
“The Power Of One” – Israel Houghton

Israel Houghton is no stranger to the Grammy awards. He’s won twice before for his albums Alive in South Africa and A Deeper Level, both with his group New Breed. This most recent win is Israel’s first win as a solo artist. I’d also like to take this opportunity to wave a good-natured “I told you so” in the face of Israel’s naysayers (of which their shouldn’t be many). I won’t repeat my reasons here, but I gushed about this release which topped my list of the Best Gospel Albums in 2009.

Best Traditional Gospel Album:
“Oh Happy Day” – Various Artists

Based on sheer star power alone, it’s no wonder Oh Happy Day: An All-Star Music Celebration beat out stiff competition from Vickie Winans and Donald Lawrence in the Traditional Gospel category. The album invited multiracial artists from varied denominational backgrounds and musical styles to perform traditional Gospel songs and Gospel-themed pop songs. Among the guests who made this collection shine were The Clark Sisters, Jon Bon Jovi, Al Green, Heather Headley, Queen Latifah, Angelique Kidjo, Michael McDonald, Joss Stone, Robert Randolph, 3 Doors Down, and many more.

Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album:
“Audience of One” – Heather Headley

The most fantastic upset of the year comes courtesy of Heather Headley‘s hard fight to claim the Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album. Heather was this year’s “dark horse,” as Audience of One is only her first album as a gospel artist. Her pedigree as the Tony Award-winning Broadway star of The Lion King, didn’t stop her from launching a respectable career as an R&B singer against the odds. Apparently against-the-odds is Heather’s specialty, because again, even with established gospel favorites Sheri Jones-Moffett, J. Moss, Smokie Norful, and Kierra Sheard as her competition, this preacher’s daughter from Trinidad takes home top honors.

Donnie McClurkin, Headley Lead Grammy Gospel Winners

Donnie McClurkin, Heather Headley, and Mary Mary walked away from Sunday’s grammy awards with top honors, leading a strong pack of Gospel winners.

McClurkin, earning the first award of the evening, accepted best gospel performance for “Wait On The Lord”, joined by Karen Clark, McClurkin embraced fellow Grammy nominee Tonex, who presented the evening’s electronic and gospel categories.

Clark Sheard, thanking McClurkin, celebrated the win — her fourth Grammy win overall.

Taking a step back to Gospel roots paid off for Heather Headley, who picked up Contemporary R&B Gospel Album (“Audience of One”).

Israel Houghton and Mary Mary also picked up awards at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards, Sunday, January 31, 2010.

Mary Mary wins second American Music Award for Contemporary Inspirational

If you followed the 2009 American Music Awards last night, tucked away between the revealing costumes, the bleeped lyrics, and the colossal embarrassment that was Adam Lambert, gospel duo Mary Mary unobtrusively won Favorite Artist in the Contemporary Inspirational category.

Second AMA for Mary Mary

This is the second time the sisters have won an American Music Award – they also won the Favorite Inspirational/Christian Contemporary Artist Award in 2005. That’s an award each for sisters Erica and Tina Campbell who are Mary Mary.

Mary Mary’s AMA Award One Honor Among Many in 2009

Their latest American Music Award win helps Mary Mary close out 2009 in style. They have already won a Grammy® Award, a Dove Award, an NAACP Image Award and a BET Award for their latest album, The Sound, which has spent 52 weeks on a Billboard chart and is still #10. This is the highest rank for a song that has spent 52 weeks on a chart in the Nielson SoundScan era (since 1992). The Sound peaked at #1 on several of Billboard Christian and Gospel albums charts and was #1 on the Billboard Gospel Album chart for 19 consecutive weeks after its release in October 2008, spending four weeks at #1 on the Billboard Top Christian Albums chart.

The 2009 American Music Awards took place at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. on Sunday, November 22nd on ABC. Gospel artists Jeremy Camp, Brandon Heath, and Mary Mary received nominations for Contemporary Inspirational, while Mary Mary was also nominated for Soul/R&B. Other artists nominated who have been covered in this column include: Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, Whitney Houston, and Michael Jackson.
