Violent Halloween In D.C. As 6 Are Shot Across City

A series of shootings occurred last night in Washington D.C. as the city celebrated Halloween.

Various confrontations between area youth sparked the gunfire which started in the Georgetown neighborhood.

According to WJLA-TV/ABC7, a confrontation started between two groups of people at Wisconsin Avenue and M Street NW then spilled eastwardtoward 28th Street NW, where “[a] witness says a man across the street started firing shots at the group and one victim fell to the ground.”

The shooting occurred shortly before 11 p.m., and the victim’s injuries, WJLA reports, are life threatening.

Halloween Brings Fears Of Gang Violence

Halloween brings a lot of fun with parties, costumes and candy. It can also bring violence. Many gangs have initiation rituals that take place on Halloween and it can also bring violence.

Rumors have also helped stir up fear on Halloween, as false reports of plans for violence often spread.

The Grio reports:

In recent years, police in some cities such as New York have tried to dispel these fears, while other cities have taken the threats seriously. For example, last year at Fairfield University in Connecticut, the school’s department of public safety sent an email to students regarding reports of a potential gang initiation that would target college students on Halloween. Fairfield and Bridgeport police departments worked together with the university to investigate the matter.

2008 was a busy year for the “gang initiation week” concept. In the days before Halloween in 2008, two men were arrested in Newark, New Jersey for a drug- and gang-related shooting rampage that left two dead. And an intelligence report by the Virginia state police presented a possible scenario in which the Bloods would target law enforcement on Halloween, with an ambush precipitated by a low-level gang member following a call to police about a domestic disturbance or a street fight.

Do Black Christians Lack Halloween Spirit?

With Halloween here, the view of the holiday in the Black community has always been one with many opinions.

For many, especially children, it is a chance to dress up, gobble some bite-sized candy and celebrate “imaginary spooks.”

The super-charged media holiday is almost impossible to “avoid” and we are all accustomed to the sea of pumpkins, “gory” costumes and hoards of children “trick-or-treating.”

And Halloween is big business. According to the 2011 Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey conducted by BIGresearch, Americans are expected to spend about $6.86 billion on this year’s holiday.

Christian attitudes towards Halloween are diverse. Some embrace Halloween and view it as an innocent holiday which provides light relief and activities for children.

Gabriele Amorth, a Vatican-appointed exorcist in Rome, has said, “If English and American children like to dress up as witches and devils on one night of the year that is not a problem. If it is just a game, there is no harm in that.”

A video has been posted on YouTube of two groups of women throwing chairs, bottles, and tables at an East Oakland Denny’s Restaurant. Apparently the brawl was between a group of girls from “P-Town” and a group of girls from “The Town,” presumably Oakland.

Black Horror Films to Rent This Halloween

With Halloween just around the corner, ’tis the season for a good scary movie.

While we’re sure you could go watch the latest installment in the Saw franchise, or watch some of the “standards” like Texas Chainsaw Massacre or the Friday The 13th series, we’d like to suggest you rent some of these horror films with predominantly black casts!

Blacula (1972)

William Marshall stars in this blaxploitation film as Prince Mamuwalde, the leader of an African nation. He reaches out to Count Dracula to help stop the slave trade, but the count is revealed to be rather racist. The count converts Mamuwalde into a vampire and gives him the name “Blacula.” Fast forward 200 years later and “Blacula” is still alive and unleashed into the world after a coffin he was sealed in is opened.

Def By Temptation (1990)

Produced by legendary low-budget indie film studio Troma Films, Def By Temptation stars Kadeem “Dwayne Wayne” Hardison and Bill Nunn as a pair of vampire hunters who are after a female vampire who is killing men around the city. This hilariously so-bad-it’s-great movie also features cameo appearances by singers Melba Moore and Freddie Jackson.

Tales From The Hood (1995)

This film features Clarence “Linc from the Mod Squad” Williams III as a storytelling funeral director who tells four frightening tales about four of his recent customers to three young thugs looking to buy drugs from him. Needless to say, the funeral director isn’t exactly who he says he is…

Candyman (1992)

By definition, Candyman isn’t exactly a “black horror film,” but the fact that the title character happens to be black warrants it a place on the list. The film is about an urban legend concerning a character named “Candyman” who you can summon by saying his name five times in front of a mirror. The only downside is that if you do that, he’ll kill you. So we don’t really know why anyone would want to run the risk of getting killed over something like that. Despite that, Candyman was a critical and box office success and spawned two sequels.

Vampire In Brooklyn (1995)
Eddie Murphy and Angela Bassett starred in this horror/comedy film directed by horror film legend Wes Craven. Murphy plays the titular role in this film that’s bigger on laughs than it is on scary moments. Long considered one of Murphy’s worst films (at least until Pluto Nash and Norbit came around), the film actually did well in the box office and got moderate reviews.

Blackenstein (1973)

We actually haven’t seen Blackenstein yet, but based on the trailer, we just might have to indulge. Obviously a retelling of Mary Shelley’s classic Frankenstein, but with a black cast, the film was made after the success of Blacula but failed at box offices.

We don’t understand how that’s possible when the tag line of your film is “To stop this brother takes one bad mother!”

Many Christians choose not to observe Halloween. As one of the most popular holidays in our culture—for some, oddly enough, it’s even more celebrated than Christmas—it can present a challenge for Christian families, especially when children are involved.

Although, I won’t discuss here all the “whys” and “why nots,” and what the Bible says about Halloween, (you can read more on that below) I will, however, offer some fun and practical alternatives to enjoy this year with your family.

Biblical References for Halloween

Instead of focusing on the negative aspects of Halloween, you can turn the holiday into a positive, relationship-building tradition for your family. These ideas offer alternatives to the customary Halloween activities. They are simple suggestions to start you thinking and planning. Add your own creativity and there’s no limit to the possibilities for family fun!

Fall Festival or Harvest Party

Offering a harvest party has been a popular Halloween alternative among Christian churches for years. A Fall Carnival or Harvest Festival adds a slightly new twist to this Christian alternative to the customary Halloween activities. Organizing an event at your church gives children and parents a place to go and benefit from celebrating together with other families. Bible theme costumes offer an endless source of amusing choices. A new variation to this old idea is to create a carnival atmosphere. With some well-thought-out planning, you can involve various established small groups from within your church to host carnival booths. Each group can creatively choose a theme, such as a “hoola-hoop” contest, or a gourd toss, providing a carnival midway of entertaining games. Youth Pumpkin Patch Fun-Raiser

Instead of the usual youth car wash fund raiser, why not plan something totally different this year to raise money for the youth winter camp? Consider helping the youth group of your church organize a pumpkin patch and create an exciting Christian alternative to Halloween. The church youth can sell the pumpkins and the profits can go toward funding their next youth camp. To pump up the interest level, more pumpkin related activities can be incorporated, such as a pumpkin carving contest, a pumpkin cook-off, a carving demonstration, or even a pumpkin bake sale. Another option could be to organize the pumpkin patch project with your neighbors instead. One family might even sponsor such an event on a small scale in your own neighborhood as an alternative to trick-or-treating.

Family Pumpkin Carving

For a more subdued Christian alternative to Halloween, you might consider planning a family pumpkin carving project. This would be a more personal time of fellowship with the members of your family. Conclude the festivities by partaking in a slice of homemade pumpkin pie! Remember, family traditions don’t have to be gigantic, just memorable.

Fall Decorating

Another suggestion for a less adventurous Halloween alternative would be to plan a fall decorating event with your family. The changing season inspires just the right atmosphere for this occasion, and it becomes both meaningful and memorable to include the whole family in the process. Has Halloween Become An Outlet For Racism?

Something about Halloween brings the inner racist out of others. All of those dormant racist, narrow-minded thoughts that people have about African Americans and other minority groups begin to slip out all in the name of Halloween fun! The debate is when to assume that it is all in good fun or when to take action because lines have been crossed?

One of accused this year is the mega store chain corporation Kohls. Kohl’s has pulled a Halloween wig from its website after outrage broke out on the store’s Facebook page over the name. The “Ghetto Fab” wig which is available in blond and brunette, is a poofy little wig with tight ringlets that is supposed to be attached onto the back of one’s head. What makes the wig ghetto or fabulous is not clear. However, Facebookers were not happy about this Halloween theme. The people took to their Facebook page to complain about the costume.

“I am in no ways ‘ghetto’ and neither is my kinky hair,” wrote one poster. Another poster stated “A “Ghetto Fab” wig for Halloween? Seriously, Kohl’s?!,” wrote one poster. “I find the term “ghetto fabulous” TASTELESS!” Meanwhile Kohls reacted to the controversy and racist labels by initially changing the name to “Curly Wig” on their website. Still worried over more back lash, the company decided to pull the wig from online and in stores completely. The VP of Kohls public relations later issued a statement where he claimed that the wig “in no way reflects the values of our company”.

Kohls is not the first major chain store that has let their racist impressions of minorities slip during Halloween. Last year Target was scrutinized by the Latino community for having their “illegal alien” costume. The costume showed a space alien carrying a green card and included a prison-like jumpsuit with “Illegal Alien” stamped across the front. Target says that the costume was never intended to be on the website and blames the mistake on human error during data entry.

Target spokesman Joshua Thomas said the item was put on its website by mistake when an employee entered a wrong number into the system. Target has a strict review process with its vendors, he said. “We apologize. This was never intended to be part of our assortment. We are moving as quickly as possible to remove it from our website.” Others are not too sure if this was a mistake made by Target or a costume that was chosen in bad taste.

Has Halloween become an outlet for people to release their prejudice all in “good humor”? Or are people too sensitive about issues of race and should not take these costumes seriously during Halloween?

It’s time to start thinking about Halloween costumes if you haven’t already. There are a ton of celebrities in 2010 to dress up as. Here’s our top 9 list:

Kat Stacks: This costume is more about the voice than anything. Think how you can be the most annoying and go for it. Chop off the bangs of a bad wig and don’t forget your long list of rappers that you f*cked.

Montana Fishburne/Brian Pumper: This is the ultimate partner costume. Just get a thong, some flesh colored tights and burn cigarettes in them and there you go. If you want to be Brian Pumper just get some chains and a wife beater and stand by your girl while she shakes it.

Antoine Dodson: This is probably the most economical Halloween costume because all you really need is a black wife beater, a red bandanna and some naps to go in it. Remember, YOU ARE SO DUMB!

Drake: Now every light-skinned brotha out there has to worry about people coming up to him and saying, “I know who you are! DRAKE!” Not all bi-racial people look alike. If that’s the case then Obama should be Drake for Halloween. Try getting a wheel chair and being Jimmy Brooks from Degrassi. That’ll get you maaaad street cred.

T.I. & Tiny: Go out Bonnie & Clyde style as Tiny and T.I. Make yourselves a fake bottle of codeine and cuff your hands together all night.

Nicki Minaj: If done right this could possibly be the best costume on our list. Think bright wigs, leggings, false eye lashes, loud colors and butt pads. Build a Barbie Doll box while you’re at it. Don’t forget your crazy face too.

Willow Smith: This is a great costume for your little girl. Basically, just let her pick out whatever she wants to wear and pin her hair back so it looks shaved.

Amber Rose: Now if you really want to shave your head but have always been too afraid, this might be your perfect excuse.

Lil Wayne In Jail: Weezy doesn’t get out until November. Perfect timing.

Around 6:50 we here at the Yolanda Adams Morning Show like to give this award to a person, a public figure, a city, or a country for doing something so wrong that it would make Fred Sanford call you, “a dummy”. This one goes out to the 18-year-old man in a breathalyzer costume who got pulled over, at Miami University, for driving under the influence. Can you say, irony?

An 18-year-old man in a breathalyzer costume found himself blowing into one after police stopped him for allegedly driving the wrong way with no headlights on a one-way street Halloween night.

Oxford police said they found an open container and a partial case of beer in the front seat and beer in the trunk when they stopped James P. Miller, of Cincinnati.

Police said Miller was arrested and blew a 0.158 percent blood alcohol level on a breathalyzer test. The legal limit for driving is 0.08.
