What exactly is considered a “megachurch” these days? By definition, large aggregations or churches that have a weekly attendance rate of 2,000 or more persons is considered to be “mega” and/or a high profile church in your city.

But this week, those megachurches all across the nation have reportedly been investigated or studied to find out just how much money the pastors are taking home. Check this out.

According to a recent study, the average salary for a lead pastor in a megachurch sits more than comfortably at $147,000 with some spiritual leaders and well-known ministers taking home $400,000 at the end of the year. Low end pastors’ salaries rank at just under $40,000.

A group of surveyors at the Leadership Network also revealed that the median salary has largely remained the same over the past few years even as attendance at some of these churches has increased. The attendance factor is the key component to figuring out how these numbers work.

Weekend worship attendance at the churches range from 1,000 to 14,999 and respondents represent 38 states and four Canadian provinces, while the typical megachurch in the survey is suburban, has a total budget of over $5 million and has more than 50 members considered full-time staff.
