Debbie Allen is back at it again, but this time she’s looking out for the young people as she announces upcoming auditions for the Creole revival of the Charles Dickens classic “Oliver Twist.”

Allen, who directed the African-American revival of “Cat on Hot Tin Roof” on Broadway and in London is now taking the new interpretation “Twist” to the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta from Sept. 1 thru Oct. 3.

The theatre, television and film veteran announced earlier this morning that she and her talented staff of thespian trainers, composers, directors and more will be holding auditions in select cities beginning this month to build the perfect cast for the new musical.

The musical is set in New Orleans in 1928 and was written by Tony nominee William F. Brown, who penned “The Wiz.” Grammy Award winner Tena Clark and composer Gary Prim round out the creative braintrust.

Here are the audition cities and dates:

  • Los Angeles, CA April 21–27
  • Atlanta, GA April 29 – May 3
  • New Orleans, LA May 4- 5
  • New York, NY May 5 – 10

Now I’ve always loved Ms. Debbie Allen simply because beyond her comedic timing and incredible energy onstage and television, she’s more than a pretty face or a gifted vocalist. She’s always moving theatre forward by creating new and exciting opportunities especially for the young generation and thespians of color. Whether you’re an amateur or a seasoned performer, Ms. Debbie Allen always has constructive, honest criticism and a she always finds a way to bring out the best in the casts she’s worked with. Kudos again to Ms. Debbie Allen! This is one show I’ll definitely have to find my way down to Atlanta to see in September.

Will you attend or help send anyone down to auditions? If so, tell us what you’re most excited about and share some of your favorite theatre experiences.
