A Roselawn neighborhood was in shock Wednesday morning following the stabbing death of a 93-year-old woman in front of her apartment building Tuesday evening.
Police received a call at 6:08 p.m. reporting that someone had been stabbed.
Authorities arrived at the scene and found Ida Martin, 93, in front of her apartment building in the 1500 block of Summit Road suffering from at least one stab wound.
She was taken to University Hospital where she died a few hours later, according to Cincinnati police Capt. Mike Neville.
Neighbors and friends of Martin said they were horrified that she was attacked so brutally in broad daylight.
“She was 93, that’s crazy,” said Martinez Payton, 18, who lived in the apartment below from Martin’s. “Who would do that?”
Payton said he couldn’t think of any reason for someone to hurt Martin.
“I never saw her being mean to anybody,” he said. “I never saw her even mad.”
He said Martin lived alone, but relatives often came to check on her. They helped her eat and bathe.
Martin’s small apartment complex is next door to Summit East Apartments, a senior living community. The stabbing occurred across the street from Roselawn Condon School and the now-closed Jewish Community Center.
Martin’s son in law Ron Hamm, 61, of Elmwood Place, said she was attacked while walking. She had surgery earlier this year and often walked to limber herself up.
“I doubt seriously she would have had her purse with her. We don’t know if it was just a random act or if someone just approached her for money. She doesn’t walk very far. She was about 40 feet outside her front door.”
He said the family is horrified and huddled at Martin’s apartment today. She had four children who often checked on her.
