Who Turned Off the Lights at the Super Bowl?

The biggest sporting event of the year experienced an electrical glitch last night.

With just 13 minutes left in the third quarter of Super Bowl XLVII, half of the Mercedes Benz Superdome’s lights went out. This delayed the game for over 30 minutes.

In a joint public statement between the stadium’s energy provider and the stadium’s operator, they said,

“A piece of equipment that is designed to monitor electrical load sensed an abnormality in the system. Once the issue was detected, the sensing equipment operated as designed and opened a breaker, causing power to be partially cut to the Superdome in order to isolate the issue.”

This isn’t the first time the lights have gone out on a 49ers football game. In 2011, the lights went out at Candlestick Park on a Monday night football game against the Steelers.

The Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Fransisco 49ers 34-31 to become the 2013 Super Bowl champions.

Black Football Coaches Shut Out of Eight NFL Head Coach Vacancies

It was announced this morning that Indianapolis offensive coordinator Bruce Arians will be the next coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

That means the Cardinals, in addition to Philadelphia, Kansas City, Cleveland, Buffalo, Jacksonville, Chicago, and San Diego have filled all of their head coaching vacancies. Eight out of the 30 teams, in the NFL, did not hire or barely even considered a minority candidate for the job.

Many people thought Lovie Smith, the former Chicago Bears head coach, would take the head coaching job with another team, like Buffalo. Buffalo chose Syracuse University head coach Doug Marone

If you are a football fan, you’re probably aware of the deep pool of NFL assistants that have the potential to be head coaches, most of them being minorities. So why aren’t they being considered?

Mike Freeman of cbssports.com, had to good explanation to why so many successful minority NFL assistants can’t break through to the next level. He writes,

We can debate the Rooney Rule or that there is a lack of minority assistants in key offensive coordinator positions. That last fact is pointed to often as a reason for the dearth of hires this NFL cycle — or college cycle for that matter, which was equally inexcusable.

The real reason for the problem can be exemplified with the Arians hire. The real reason is coaches of color have still not broken into, in significant numbers, the NFL’s old-boy network. They are, to many owners and others in the NFL, outsiders. Until that changes, the numbers will remain somewhat bleak.

This is what I mean. Arians was fired by the Pittsburgh Steelers — some reports said Arians retired, others said his contract was not renewed. The truth is he was let go by the team.

After that, Chuck Pagano, coach of the Indianapolis Colts, hired Arians to be his offensive coordinator. Pagano and Arians are close friends.

When Pagano fell ill, Arians became the interim coach.

And that sequence, more than anything, illustrates the biggest reason for the problem. There are almost no black coaches who could get fired from a nice position (or retire or not have his contract renewed) and then have a close enough friend as a head coach who could immediately give him the same nice position.

Most black assistants don’t have those types of connections. They are not part of that network. They also don’t quickly get that same type of chance.

Bengals March To Playoffs With Win Over Ravens

The Bengals are going to the playoffs with momentum, after defeating the Baltimore Ravens yesterday.

Defensive end Carlos Dunlap intercepted a pass from Ravens Quarterback Tyrod Taylor, and ran for a touchdown to help the Bengals win 23-17.

Andy Dalton threw 10 for 15 passes for 78 yards. He threw an 11 yard touchdown pass to Marvin Jones, before he was benched in the third quarter. Marvin Lewis benched Dalton, in the second half, to rest him for the playoffs.

Regardless whether or not the Bengals won, they will still be a sixth seed in the playoffs. They will play away this Saturday against the Houston Texans at 4:30.

The fourth-seeded Ravens will host the Colts at 1 P.M. Sunday.

UC Football Wins Second Straight Bowl Game

The University of Cincinnati’s football team will go into their off-season with one more win.

The Bearcats used a furious 4th quarter comeback, last night, to defeat Duke 48-34 in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte North Carolina.

This is UC’s 2nd straight bowl game win. They won last year’s Liberty Bowl, defeating Vanderbilt University.

This win also marks another season of more than ten wins. Alabama, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Cincinnati are the only programs in the country with at least 10 wins in 5 of the last 6 seasons.

UC Football Head Coach Butch Jones Leaves For Tennessee

The University of Cincinnati is once again in search of a new head football coach.

This morning UC head coach Butch Jones announced his resignation, and has accepted the head coach position at the University of Tennessee. He will replace Derek Dooley, who was fired for his 15-21 record.

Jones was hired to coach UC football, in 2009 to replace Brian Kelly. In his three seasons, his record was 23-14. He also coached the team to two bowl games.

The Bengals Beat….The Defending Super Bowl Champs???

The Cincinnati Bengals are back in the win column for the first time in five games.

The Bengals rode Andy Dalton’s 4 touchdown passes, yesterday, in a 31-13 beating of the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

Cincinnati’s defense forced four turnovers, and scored two touchdowns in the second half.

Watch the nine-year-old girl who’s running rings around older boys as a star football player, Sam Gordon, 9, has become one of the fastest children in her local football league just a year after she started playing

A video of her game highlights posted online has gone viral

Weighing not even 60 pounds, she fearlessly tackles players weighing up to 150 pounds

There are plenty of boys chasing this little girl but they are not after a kiss on the school playground — they are trying to tackle her on the football pitch.Only problem is that nine-year-old Sam Gordon is too fast for them to catch, earning her the nickname Sweet Feet.

What started as a way to keep up with her big brother, has turned Sam into a star player in her local, all-boys football league in Utah, becoming one of the fastest children in the Salt Lake City area ‘Gremlins’ league as well as breaking and making tackles among the much bigger players.

After outrunning the boys in various speed and agility drills, Sam was made quarterback for her team.
Now a video posted online by her father Brent Gordon showing her play highlights has gone viral as people continue to be amazed at what the young, fearless girl can do and she has only been playing for a year.

Her coach Chris Staib was quoted by Yahoo!Sports saying: ‘She could cut and follow blocks like a college football player.’
Asked about the authenticity of the video, he said: ‘Oh it’s real. That’s her. I was there for all of that.’

Weighing not even 60 pounds, Sam is playing in a team of much bigger boys including a boy who weighs more than 150 pounds and nicknamed Tank but according to Mr Staib, Sam will even tackle Tank if she gets the chance.
Despite being so much smaller than all the other players, Mr Gordon said Sam is used to playing rough.

He said from his office in Idaho: ‘I started her out in soccer at four-years-old and we would play out in the yard and my son’s friends were pretty aggressive and rough.

‘She could really handle a lot of the physical play. There were some games where she’d fall down and just keep going. She would get kicked in the face, kicked in the gut and just keep going.’

Mr Gordon said that Sam told her: ‘Some kids, right before the contact, they stop. ‘I don’t. I just hit ‘em.’
He said: ‘That’s not something I taught her.’
Mr Gordon said it took her some time to adjust when she first started playing.
He said: ‘She had a little bit of a struggle.
‘The team lost a couple of games. Since she was the primary ball carrier, she felt a lot of pressure to win. She felt blame for losing.
‘With Sam, I keep questioning myself. Am I trying to make it something it’s not because I’m her dad? I asked my brother, “OK, am I just being a crazy dad here? Or is this really cool?”‘

Reds Return Home, Leading Division Series 2-0 Versus Giants

The Cincinnati Reds are enjoying an off day, in the National League Division Series, after winning its second straight game against the San Fransisco Giants.

The Reds hitters were dominant in both games, with home runs by Brandon Phillips and Ryan Ludwick.

Last night, Bronson Arroyo, gave up only 1 hit in seven innings. On Saturday, they won 5-1, and last night they won 9-0.

If you’re worried about starting pitcher Johnny Cueto, who left the first game after 8 pitches, he will be back. It was reported he just had back spasms. Tomorrow night’s starting pitcher is Homer Bailey.
