Actress Ashley Judd has decided against running for the U.S. Senate in Kentucky.

She reportedly considered a challenge to senate minority leader Mitch McConnell in 2014.

On Wednesday, she tweeted her decision, saying her responsibilities and energy need to be focused on family.

A second african-american will be occupying a U.S. Senate seat this year.

On Wednesday, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick appointed his former chief-of-staff, William “Mo” Cowan, as the interim pick to fill the state’s vacated senate seat.

The senator who vacated the seat, John Kerry, was appointed this week as the new U.S. Secretary of State.

Cowan, along with South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, will be the only two African-Americans in the 100-member United States Senate.

Immigration reform is, and has been, a huge issue.

A group of bipartisan senators, some of which include Marco Rubio of Florida and Charles Schumer of New York, have gotten together to come up with a piece of legislation that could give 11 million undocumented immigrants a pathway to citizenship. The big question is will the bill pass through congress?

(via – mediaite.com) – Appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press this afternoon, former GOP vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) praised Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and lamented that she did not win the presidency in 2008, as he believes that would lead to a better chance for deficit reduction today than under President Obama.

Host David Gregory showed Rep. Ryan video of Sec. Clinton speaking with him at the inaugural luncheon, which Ryan characterized as “chumming it up” over a variety of personal topics.

The congressman then praised Clinton: “Look, if we had a [Hillary] Clinton presidency, if we had Erskine Bowles as Chief of Staff of the White House or President of the United States, I think we would have fixed this fiscal mess by now. That’s not the kind of presidency we’re dealing with right now.”

If things had gone differently in November, Representative Paul Ryan might have left the Capitol Monday as vice president of the United States.

Instead, he faced a less than warm welcome from ceremony spectators as he made his way to attend President Barack Obama’s second inauguration. A chorus of boos, to be exact.

According to National Review, the president’s call for a higher level of discourse wasn’t received by the crowd. A writer also pointed an accusatory finger at Department of Justice lawyer Dan Freeman for starting the chorus of boos.

Ryan served as Mitt Romney’s running mate during the 2012 election, and when they lost to Mr Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, Ryan was reelected to his Wisconsin congressional seat. When asked if he would attend the ceremony last week, the congressman described it to USA Today as his “obligation.”

Video of a man being choked to death by a CVS store manager after he shoplifted from the store has surfaced, DNAinfo.com Chicago reports.

Now U.S. Representative Bobby Rush (D-Ill) is calling for a special investigation into the death of 35-year-old Anthony Kyser, who stole a tube of toothpaste from a CVS in the Little Village section of Chicago. DNAinfo.com Chicago secured the video from an unnamed source.

The video shows the lasts moments of Kyser’s life on May 8, 2010. He is shown fleeing into the alley behind the CVS with the store’s manager, Pedro Villanova, running behind him. A brief struggle ensued before Kyser falls to the ground with Villanova on top of him. Another man enters the screen and attacks Kyser while he is on the ground. More bystanders join in and help pin the man to the ground. Eventually, Kyser stops struggling and apparently goes limp. The cops and emergency workers followed, but they could not revive Kyser.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a homicide, but the Chicago Police Department said it was an accident and did not pursue criminal charges. “The video was reviewed by detectives as part of their investigation at the time,” Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Lt. Maureen Biggane said. “It was determined that criminal charges were not warranted.”

Kyser’s mother, Ann Marie Kyser, filed a lawsuit claiming the store manager committed battery and that CVS is liable. That case is still pending in Cook County Circuit Court. The video has been discussed in sworn statements taken as part of the case.

“The video shows that Anthony Kyser was being choked by the CVS store manager and that no one did anything to help,” said Jack Kennedy, an attorney with Cochran, Cherry, Givens, Smith & Montgomery, the law firm representing Kyser’s mother.

“I think it’s appalling that CVS maintains that an employee can choke someone to death if they steal from a CVS store.”

A CVS spokesman would only tell DNAinfo.com that the company does not comment on pending litigation. An attorney representing CVS and the store manager did not return calls for comment.

But in court filings in the civil case, CVS lawyers argue Kyser punched the store manager — identified in court papers at Pedro Villanova — in the face and the manager was acting in self-defense.

Through his attorney, Villanova acknowledges he “held onto Anthony Kyser on the ground while defending himself after being struck,” according to court records.

In a deposition, Villanova said: “As soon as I got hit by Mr. Kyser, that’s when it went from I’m here trying to recover the product and he can leave to all of a sudden he just punched me, so now I need to defend myself.”

In court filings, Villanova acknowledges his “arm came into contact with decedent Anthony Kyser’s throat” and he heard Kyser say “I can’t breathe.”

Soon after Kyser’s death, an outraged U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, a Chicago Democrat, sent a letter to Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez demanding action for the “brutality visited upon a homeless man.”

Rush now says his “calls for justice” were not heeded. Now, after being shown the video by DNAinfo.com, he said he hopes its release will reopen the investigation.

“This videotape … presents an undeniable moment where [his] life was snatched from him,” he said after viewing the footage. “Thank God for the videotape.”

Andrew Palmer (pictured) of Bingham Farms, Mich., received the Heroism Award Wednesday from the Boy Scouts Of America for saving his family from their burning home last year, Fox 2 News Detroit.

Back in August 2011, Palmer awoke to find his house engulfed in flames. But rather than freak out, the fifth grader took immediate action. He told his mother, then ran down the hall yelling “Fire!” and waking up his sister. Palmer’s mother, Jann, woke up his two brothers. His father wasn’t home at the time of the fire, but he was understandably filled with pride. “I’m really proud of what he did,” Lewis Palmer told Fox 2 News. 

At Palmer’s school, Bingham Elementary, the kind words kept coming. “We always say our motto is we’re bringing our Bingham best, and Andrew’s really personified that,” Principal Russ Falcone said, according to WXYZ. The school honored Palmer for his brave actions last year as well.

Fortunately, nobody was injured in the fire, which forced the Palmers to move out for 8 months while their house was renovated.

Southland Fire Chief Keith Rowley will also give Palmer a Tribute Award from Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence.
