Andrew Breitbart will headline a Republican National Committee fundraiser with Chairman Michael Steele...

Apparently the Republican National Committee is not phased by the embarassing spectacle that is conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart. They have invited him to headline a fundraiser for the GOP next month with RNC Chairman Michael Steele. Andrew Breitbart is the man who edited the videotape of Shirley Sherrod giving a speech at an NAACP event. The speech was actually demonstrating how Sherrod had overcome her prejudice by helping a white farmer and his wife save their farm, but in the Breitbart version she was cast as a discrimatory bigot who refused to help the couple. After much furor over the tape, Sherrod was fired from her position with the U.S.D.A. Once the entire tape was brought to light, the Obama administration was embarassed by their rush to judgement based on the edited version of the video.

The RNC apparently doesn’t share in the Obama administration’s embarassment over the event because Mr. Breitbart was invited to host a donor retreat in Beverly Hills that starts at $1000 and go up to $60,800 for a couple. The event, scheduled for Aug. 12, will be to update donors on the party’s plans for the midterm elections.

Citing a Clutch Magazine interview with both a current writer and former employee, the article reveals that the company that owns Essence, Time Warner, is behind the move.

It is obviously too soon to know what backlash the magazine might suffer as a result of the decision, but it does raise some interesting issues.

Can a woman who is not black successfully coordinate the fashion orientation of an iconic magazine directed at black women?

Is it a slap in the face of the loyal readers of Essence to hire her?

What direction will the magazine take in the near or long term future?

An 11-year old from New York is using her drawing skills to raise money to help the birds effected by the Gulf oil spill.

Olivia Bouler has only taken “one little class” on drawing and spends most of her time doodling on tests and her homework. She loves bird watching and decided to contact the Audubon Society with her idea of raising money by selling her bird paintings. The idea got the attention of Delta Willis, the Senior Communications Manager of The National Audubon Society. “…what Olivia has done has set a beautiful example by using her skills and creating an initiative that is fruitful for everyone,” Ms. Willis stated.

No one expected the paintings would raise more than $90,000, with a $25,000 donation from AOL. Olivia promises to send her original paintings to the first 500 donors who helped raise $25,000 then spend the remaining of her summer completing the rest of the paintings.

Olivia’s father grew up in Orange Beach, Alabama and visits her grandparents in Louisiana, so she knew that the birds were suffering from the oil spill and wanted to do something to help.

The National Audubon Society was the first to have volunteers to the Gulf Coast by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and will use the donated money to help support volunteers, rehabilitation centers, and help find transportation for the birds.

To support Olivia’s initiative, go to: http://www.aolartists.com/projects/help-the-gulf/. After donating, you can email your receipt to Oliviasbirds@aol.com where you will receive one of five prints from the originals Olivia has created. View some of her paintings below.

I’ll be the first to admit that I drink way too much coffee (this means, according to the National Coffee Association that I’m one of the 56% of American adults who regularly drink coffee). I get a Grande White Chocolate Mocha from Starbucks every morning on the way to work and an iced coffee on the way home. That’s not even the most coffee I drink – just months ago, I was drinking at around four cups a day. I was thinking this morning, though, is coffee really good for you or just a pointless caffeine addiction? Some days, I feel like I’m just drinking coffee for no real reason except to be at normal energy level and to feel productive. This issue of “caffeine dependence” is something I explored in a blog last week, which you can read below:

How To Get Rest While You’re Revved Up On Caffeine

Generally, people look at the bad side effects of coffee like stained teeth, caffeine withdrawal, and the laxative effect, but there are actually lots of health benefits associated with consuming coffee on a regular basis (although moderation is the key). Below, I will explain why coffee ISN’T a bad morning drink and why it would be helpful in keeping you living a long life.

Some general health benefits of drinking a cup or two of coffee every morning:

Coffee contains over 2,000 different chemical components, including cancer-fighting anti-oxidants

Research says that it boosts vision, improves heart health, and could help people with liver disease (ie. helps reduce the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer)

Prevents against cognitive decline in older people, including Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related dysfunction

Good news for caffeine addicts like myself: A study done just last month suggests that people who consume caffeine do better on the job than those who do not have a daily intake of caffeine

Drinking 5 to 6 cups of coffee a day may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, although research also suggests that caffeine exacerbates people who already have blood sugar issues

Coffee has been studied as reducing migraines in some people

These good things about drinking coffee are not often talked about, but the key is moderation in your intake. Drinking more than you should has side effects like: increased anxiety, withdrawal symptoms when you don’t get your coffee in the morning, insomnia (if you have coffee too close to bed time), and if you drink more than 200 milligrams of coffee while pregnant, there might be a slowing in fetal development paired with an increased heart rate for the fetus.

Keep these good and bad things in mind while drinking your morning coffee and remember to be productive – you have caffeine under you belt, so use it right!
