Interesting headlines from the week showcase the picture of an ex-Chicago officer who’s gotten himself into a sticky situation after being found guilty of lying under oath about the abuse and torture of criminal suspects.

A federal jury deliberated three days in a row before finding former Chicago police Lieutenant Jon Burge was found guilty of perjury and obstruction of justice. Now free on bond until his November 5th sentencing, Burge could face up to 45 years in prison.

What brought about the investigation? A plethora of mostly African-American suspects who complained of being beaten, burned and shocked by Burge and other detectives he allowed to torture the during the 1970s and the 1980s. Burge was fired in 1993 due to torture allegations, but he was never charged with criminal acts of torture until now.

Do you think Burge’s sentence is long overdue? Is this another example of dirty cops taking the law into their own hands for their own selfish reasons?
