Ending Father’s Day on a very strange note, a fire in Chicago’s subway system yesterday afternoon left about a dozen commuters with smoke-related injuries. According to fire officials from the city of Chicago, five of those reported injuries were serious condition cases.

So what actually happened? Apparently, railroad ties in a tunnel near the adjacent Clark Street station caught on fire as a result of being ignited by the sparks flying off passing trains. The underground fire quickly began billowing heavy puffs of black smoke above the ground causing at least ten ambulances to report to the startling scene. Is this common? Actually it is according the Chicago Fire Department. During the summer months when dry conditions and sparks combine, such fires may occur.

What did you think when you first heard the reports of the fire? If this is your first time hearing about it, let us know, too. For additional details on the story, please visit CNN.com.
