Every now and then, Dr. Bobby Jones shows out on BET. Yesterday, we had a chance to tune in (via a few convenient DVR settings) to see a few singers and psalmists doing their thing individually on the Bobby Jones Gospel soundstage. The lineup blended a little of the old with the new, but the sound of praise still remains the same. Here’s a little more of what we were able to see yesterday morning.
With co-hosts Deitrick Haddon and Dionne Warwick, we knew it’d be an interesting Sunday morning (or afternoon depending on when you caught it) for the saints at home. Let’s press rewind for those of you who were caught not tuning in this week. The beginning of the show should’ve been an eye opener for new school psalmists. Deitrick Haddon, accompanied by the Nashville Super Choir, took us straight to church with a little more of a progressive praise session, but still an authentic one filled with some awesome choir choreography. You could tell the audience enjoyed to show’s kickoff.
Up next? A little worship. Preacher, teacher, artist and pianist Smokie Norful stole our hearts like he so effortlessly does every time he sits down to tickle the ebony and ivory in worship, but of course, Norful didn’t stop there. His riveting performance and excellent control of the stage during his praise selection still has folks talking about it. This brother is so talented its crazy!
Did you think it was over? Nope, we’re just getting started. The hour-long broadcast also featured two incredible performances by our own gospel diva Vickie Winans who opened her set with her single “Safe in His Arms” and closed out the show with the hit “How I Got Over.” Her energy was on point the entire time and as she closed the show out she even brought a musical guest – her nephew who’s also featured on the hit single to bring a little “21st century” flavor to the song with jazzy riffs and simultaneous scatting with his aunt.
Speaking of moving forward, Dr. Bobby Jones was right on target with one of this season’s new artist showcases featuring one of the most beloved voices from the future of gospel. None other than our girl, second place winner of BET’s Sunday Best season two – Ms. Jessica Reedy. Billed as a “neo-gospel” singer live on the show by Dr. Bobby Jones himself, Jessica’s deep alto and husky vocal technique proved that this girl is bad. (And by “bad” we do mean all the way good.) Sweet, endearing and vocally blessed beyond measure, you can still tell that Jessica Reedy is on her training ground, but it’s amazing to watch the journey as God opens doors for such a talented young lady who’s new in the game and making quite a name for herself. Expect to see more from our girl as we hear she’s been doing more than just church gigs and spot dates across the country. Do we smell a debut project coming from Jessica? We shall have to wait and see.
