Are You Really Watching?

As you might already be aware, my good friend and gospel aficionado MusicJunkie has been keeping an eye out for me on some of the hottest singing and music competitions America has so severely become fascinated with in the last few years. Primarily, one comes to mind since we just spotted the group of finalists rip the stage last night on BET’s Sunday Best.

Now, Cincinnati, if you haven’t been watching, catch up with the rest of your family, friends and church members by viewing some of the the weekly recaps since this third season began almost a month ago.

Sunday Best Premiere Draws Millions

The reason I brought it all up is because MusicJunkie shared the most interesting article with me over the weekend and, of course, I now want to share it with you and hopefully hear your opinions. It’s an article from Newsweek that discusses the apparent pros and cons of a show like Sunday Best, but who knew there really were any to begin with?

As a spin-off of the media and music giant that is FOX19‘s American Idol, BET’s Sunday Best might be neglecting certain types or groups of viewers within the millions more the show has drawn since the start of the current season. Are we really watching closely at what’s happening these days or are we not concerned anymore with why folks choose to tune in or tune out?

To read more on the commentary, visit Newsweek and hear what they had to say about this season’s vocal competition born out of a lack of shows like them that give gospel singers from all walks of life a chance to challenge their chops in front of judges and music fans alike.

After reading the article, post your thoughts and responses in the comments section below. Do you agree or disagree with the opinions and observations presented regarding one of black gospel’s biggest programming trends? Tell us what comes to mind when you think of television shows like this one.
