Michael Steele, the Republican National Committee’s first black chairman, spoke before audiences and voiced that his party wants to help the black community, but also encouraged African Americans to learn to do a better job of depending on themselves instead of waiting for the government to create opportunities.

Steele’s speech and views received mixed commentary among the multitude of black activists gathering at this week’s annual meeting of the National Action Network, an organization founded by the Rev. Al Sharpton.
