Any time a Black movie does well in the box office, shock and surprise seem to pour from the media. Malcolm D. Lee, director of “The Best Man Holiday,” spoke with Roland Martin about why there shouldn’t be much surprise when a Black film exceeds expectations. “I think it’s been a fantasic year for the diversity of African American cinema,” said Lee, “it’s been what we’ve been waiting for, not just one type of Black movie.”
And while many in the entertainment world and on social media are complaining about slavery movies, as Roland Martin points out, over 19 movies with Black leading casts or directors were released this year — and only one was about slavery.
