An early morning crash on the Long Island Expressway last Friday could have turned tragic if not for the heroic actions of a gasoline truck driver who happened to witness the crash. Alex Mitchell, 37, of Queens, helped save the man from the wreckage and immediately got back to work after his kind act.

A Chevy Blazer veered off the LIE at around 2 a.m. Friday, right in front of Mitchell. The vehicle hit a tree so hard that the rear end flipped upwards. Mitchell pulled his truck over to the shoulder, dialed 911 and headed over to the accident.

John Bissau, 37, couldn’t get free on his own as his foot was pinned down inside the car. Mitchell called out to Bissau, and the trucker pulled him from the burning vehicle. It was later discovered that Bissau, a Long Island resident, had been drinking and driving and was charged with a DWI.

Amazingly enough, Mitchell returned to his work shift immediately after.

“Business as usual,” said Mitchell to the New York Daily News, who began his shift shortly before witnessing the accident. “I still had another 12 hours.”

Mitchell, who was born in Jamaica and served in the U.S. Air Force, has downplayed the event despite police and his family hailing him as a hero. “The best part about it is my mom said she’s proud of what I did. That’s the best feeling,” shared Mitchell of the ordeal.

However, there was a tense moment for the good samaritan, as Mitchell told NewsDay regarding one of the tires exploding from the heat. “I’m glad I had the courage to go out there and help someone,” Mitchell said. “Now I’m like, ‘What the heck!’”

Bissau is currently recovering from his injuries at Southside Hospital.
