Minor league baseball team Brooklyn Cyclones will host a series of Unity Day events Monday, after a nearby Jackie Robinson statue was vandalized last Wednesday with racist slurs and swastikas.

Unity Day events will highlight the racial unity the statue — which features Robinson, Major League Baseball’s first Black player, being embraced by Brooklyn Dodger teammate Pee Wee Reese – embodies.
“We wanted to use this as a platform to show what Jackie and Pee Wee stood for and not have the conversation just be about what happened to the statue,” said team spokesman Billy Harner.
The team will kick off the event by rededicating the statue at 5 p.m. at MCU Park. Subsequently, there will be a Brooklyn Cyclones game against the Staten Island Yankees. At 8:30 p.m., there will be a free screening of “42,” a film about Robinson’s life.
Doing their part to help, the Daily News is offering a $50,000 reward for any information leading to the vandals’ capture and arrest.
