BRANDON’S STORY:

“My son, Brandon Jackson, was a great person, son and friend. We were very close, but in his quiet dignity he never told me he was an organ donor. He never bragged about what he did. If you asked something of him, and he felt in his heart that it would help someone, his answer was always yes. The impact of his gift of donation has touched me in such a way that now after being led by Brandon’s spirit I am a donor, and many of my family members and friends are now donors. In my family, because of Brandon, we don’t want to ‘Be Like Mike.’ We all want to be like Brandon.
“Brandon was loving, fun, strong, handsome, smart, goofy, reliable and dedicated. Amazingly, I’m still hearing stories from people who think of him every day.
“I’m torn, but glad, that others were blessed to be recipients of Brandon’s gift. If they only knew what greatness they possess within their bodies. I encourage people to donate, for it is a wonderful thing to be able to give life to another. Brandon is a living testimony, still living and breathing and enjoying life somewhere, everywhere. Can you imagine being in four to five places at the same time enjoying life? That’s how I imagine Brandon. I may not be able to touch him right now or hear his voice, but I know he is all over within some blessed recipient.”

WHY YOU SHOULD REGISTER TO PASS LIFE ON THROUGH ORGAN AND TISSUE DONATION:

Every 14 minutes a new name is added to the National Waiting List
The number one problem with donation and transplantation today is that there aren’t enough life-saving organs for everyone who needs them.

THE NUMBERS

Approximate number of patients on the current waiting list for organ donation:
• More than 100,000 people in the U.S.
• Approximately 3,000 people in Ohio
• Nearly 500 people in Cincinnati
• About 1,100 people in Indiana
• And 620 people in Kentucky

THE AVERAGE

18 people on average – men, women and children – die each day while waiting for a life-saving transplant. That’s more than 6,500 lives lost each year.

THE FACTS

Everyone is a potential donor regardless of age, race or medical history. There are approximately 80 potential donors each year in the Tri-State.

DID YOU KNOW?

50 percent of all patients waiting for an organ transplant in the U.S. are minorities.

THE GIFT

“My wife and I have four sons, and the most important thing to us is family. When our son Alex was two months old the doctors told us that he had a problem with his liver and to complicate things further, he also had problems with his heart. Within a few months, he had open heart surgery which complicated his liver condition even more, and the doctors at Children’s Hospital told us that he would need a liver transplant. We were all devastated by this news, especially his brothers.
“We as a family are very grateful to the family who made the courageous decision to donate their loved one’s organs. Because of their heroic decision our son Alex is alive today and is a lively 3 year old boy. We were fortunate, because Alex’s wait for a life saving transplant was not a long one. Although his mother was ready and willing to donate to help our son, we received the call a few days later than a match had been found for Alex.
“Today, Alex is very active and is able to go to preschool and live life as any other 3 year old would. I would encourage people to learn the facts about the donation process before they make a decision. My son would not be alive today if it was not for the heroic decision made by one family to give the greatest of gifts by passing life on.”
