A second african-american will be occupying a U.S. Senate seat this year.

On Wednesday, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick appointed his former chief-of-staff, William “Mo” Cowan, as the interim pick to fill the state’s vacated senate seat.

The senator who vacated the seat, John Kerry, was appointed this week as the new U.S. Secretary of State.

Cowan, along with South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, will be the only two African-Americans in the 100-member United States Senate.
