The racial wealth gap has hit an all-time high.

The median net worth of white households is now 20 times that of a black household. Some economists say a large part of the wealth gap is due to home ownership.

Home ownership has been an important factor in creating a solid, white, middle-class, but it has not done the same for most black home-owners. Analysts say the reason is that blacks and whites buy homes in different neighborhoods.

Research shows that homes, in majority black neighborhoods, do not appreciate as much as homes in overwhelmingly white neighborhoods.

A study by the Brookings Institution found that black-owned homes in predominantly white communities were valued at 18% less that white-owned homes.
