Violence is prevalent in our society because of our societal changes and lax laws. There are  reasons why violence has increased in our country.

Here are just a few that are key.

When we become desensitized to death or killing, violence increases. When death and violence surrounds someone, the value of human life can diminish and the horror of violent death can decrease. We will watch 200,000 graphic violent acts on TV by age 18. Make sure that you read our story, Hollywood Movie Makers Might Have “Violence Summit” . The problem is real not imaginary.

When we become more detached from each other and from common unifying beliefs, violence increases. When individuals become isolated, marginalized, and without some connection to those around them, violence increases. The amount of time children spend on computers at home is staggering. They do not know how to play games  or communicate with each other outside of technology.

We have easy access to handguns. There is ready availability of lethal weapons in our society. Requiring that all guns sales take place through Federal Firearms License holders with mandatory background checks will help. Pass laws making it next to impossible to purchase armor piercing bullets, automatic assault weapons and repealing the The Tiahrt Amendment * is a  great start. The Tiahrt Amendment is named for original sponsor, U.S. Representative Todd Tiahrt (R-KS), and makes provisions attached to federal spending bills that make it harder for law enforcement officers to aggressively pursue criminals who buy and sell illegal guns. The Tiahrt Amendments** require the Justice Department to destroy the record of a buyer whose NICS background check was approved within 24 hours. This makes it harder to catch law-breaking gun dealers who falsify their records, and it makes it more difficult to identify and track straw purchasers who buy guns on behalf of criminals who wouldn’t be able to pass a background check  Read our story Gun Violence By The Numbers & What You Can Do.

It should be noted that the strongest correlation with peace among the education data is the share of a state’s population with at least a high school diploma. In Texas, which is among the least peaceful states, just over 80 percent have at least a high school diploma — the country’s lowest rate. Minnesota’s rate of nearly 92 percent is the country’s second highest. That state is also one of the most peaceful.*
