Today is Juneteenth: the oldest known celebration to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States dating back to 1865.

On June 19th, 1865, union soldiers led by Major General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston Texas with news that the war ended and that the slaves were free. This was two and half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
