She spoke out for civil rights, acted opposite Sidney Poitier, and had a singing voice so full of sensation and passion often compared to Billie Holiday. Abbey Lincoln died on Saturday at her Manhattan home at the age of 80.

Lincoln, an influential entertainer to many younger performers such as Cassandra Wilson, was born as Anna Marie Wooldridge in Chicago in 1930. Her stage name was a unique combination of Westminster Abbey and Abraham Lincoln – a suggestion made by fellow musician Bob Russell in the 50’s.

Lincoln recorded her first album “Affair: A Story of a Girl in Love” in 1956. During the same year, the project debuted in the classic Jayne Mansfield comedy “The Girl Can’t Help It,” directed by Frank Tashlin.

Lincoln also lent her voice to Max Roach’s critically acclaimed album “We Insist! Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suit.” Shortly after the collaboration, Lincoln married Roach.

Following the success of her album, she starred in the 1964 African-American drama “Nothing but a Man,” and four years later shared the big screen with Poitier in the romantic comedy “For the love of Ivy.” Her 2007 album “ Abbey Sings Abbey” is considered a jazz classic as is the loving memory of this acclaimed artist.

Abbey Lincoln will surely live continuously in our hearts and spirit and the music she gave us. To continue reading coverage of the life and career of Abbey Lincoln, please visit BlackAmericaWeb.com.
