Donald Thrower drove from Madisonville to East Price Hill Monday to do his part in helping fight crime in Cincinnati.

He turned in a gun he’d found near a dumpster. The gun went to to Project Nehemiah and in return, he collected a $100 Walmart gift card.

Thrower was among 50 people who brought weapons to the first of four gun buyback programs slated for 2012. The effort is designed to keep guns off the streets and out of the hands of young people.

It came on the Martin Luther King, Jr. national holiday and on the heels of Cincinnati’s first three homicides of the New Year this past weekend.

“If I threw it in the garbage, maybe someone would have found it and used it. So, I figured this was a good way to dispose of it,” he said. “I feel like there’s too many people out there killing each other over basically nothing. It’s a shame.”
