Could there be a wedding between Bert and Ernie on Sesame Street?
That may be the case if a group of online petitioners convince the producers of the TV show to do so. Lair Scott, of Illinois, started the petition with the idea that having a same-sex wedding, on the show, will educate kids on tolerance toward the LGBT community.
In the description of his petition, Scott writes, “For over 40 years, our beloved Sesame St. characters, Bert and Ernie, have been living as ‘roomates’ and we would like PBS and Sesame St. to allow them to live as a gay couple and maybe eventually, marry.” So far, over 4,000 signatures have been added to the petition.
Scott’s movement has gotten the attention of Sesame Street producers. In a written statement, the producers reiterate that “Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.”
