A lot of news has been going on with state governments and how they are controlling the costs of their prisons. In California, the supreme court ordered the state to release as much as 32,000 prisoners. In Illinois, they’ve decided to end the death penalty because of its high costs.

Ohio state legislators, this week, are creating a bill that will send non-violent convicts to community-based centers instead of prisons. In addition, inmates can reduce their prison sentence by completing rehabilitation programs.

The reform doesn’t stop at the state level. Lawmakers in capitol hill are also taking steps as well. Ohio Senator Rob Portman and Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy have introduced a bill that will give state governments the resources they need to rehabilitate their prisoners. The bill is called the second-chance act and it provides support for planning and implementation of key re-entry projects to ensure that those projects use methods proven through testing and review to lead to meaningful reductions.
